Holiday Mode: Finding the Balance

Holiday Mode: Finding the Balance

Continuing the summer theme from last month, Summer Body Tips this blog is all about holidays and options for staying consistent on holiday.

Whether you’re lying by the pool, exploring a new city, spending time alone or with family, holidays are a time to relax.

While you are away, your usual routine is likely to look a little different—and that’s absolutely fine. Holidays are for making memories, switching off, and enjoying a well-earned break.

One of the biggest worries my clients have before going away is, “What if I lose all my progress?” The truth is, that a week or two away from your normal routine won’t undo months of consistent effort.

There are different ways to approach getting into holiday mode and finding the balance that works for you.

The first is to completely switch off. Enjoy the food, have the cocktails, skip the workouts, and don’t give it another thought. Rest is important, and a break from tracking, planning, and training may be exactly what you need. When you come back, you can then return to your usual routine.

The second is to stay a little active and make a few mindful choices. That doesn’t mean spending hours in the hotel gym or saying no to puddings – or cake for breakfast! It might be walking instead of getting a taxi, taking a swim, trying a morning workout, or balancing indulgent meals with lighter options. Staying consistent on holiday can help you feel energised and maintain the habits you’ve worked hard to build.

Neither approach is better than the other. The best choice is the one that allows you to enjoy your holiday without guilt.

Personally, I prefer to keep moving and enjoy a morning walk to beat the heat. I pop to the gym with my headphones for a quick blast with the weights – opting for full body, compound moves for speed so I can get back to the sunbed. I’m not a great swimmer but a few aqua aerobic moves in the pool make an appearance too – this also gives my friends a laugh! Please be sensible in the heat and adjust the intensity as needed.

Foodwise, I keep an eye on the protein. Yoghurt, seeds and eggs with breakfast, taking protein bars or trying local ones to snack on, then lean meat or fish with dinner. Switching a few sugary cocktails for Cava or a G&T is also a good option.  Staying hydrated with water and non-alcoholic drinks is a must!

It’s also worth noting that any weight gain you notice after a holiday is often temporary. Changes on the scales are usually caused by extra carbohydrates, salt, alcohol, and travelling, all of which increase water retention. Once you’re back home, eating your usual meals, drinking plenty of water, sleeping well, and moving regularly again, your body naturally settles back into its routine.

At JaneyHFit, fitness is about creating habits that fit around your life—not the other way around. That’s why there are no prepay commitments. If you’re away, you can enjoy your holiday without the financial guilt of missing classes. I’ll be here when you get back, to admire your tan, listen to your adventures and get you moving again.

You can expect gentle nudges, encouragement, and accountability—not nagging. My job is to support you, celebrate your wins, and help you get back into your routine when you’re ready.

If you’ve got a holiday coming up, go and enjoy it. Whether you choose complete relaxation or keep moving a little while you’re away, remember that consistency is measured over months and years—not over a single week. Staying consistent on holiday may help with your goals but it’s also good to rest and recharge too.

So, have an amazing holiday, and I’ll see you when you’re back, ready to pick up where you left off.
