10 Tips for a Summer Body — That Actually Lasts All Year

With the mini heat wave in the UK last week and summer fast approaching, many people start thinking about getting a “summer body.” Social media is filled with promises of rapid transformations, extreme diets and quick-fix workout plans. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned from my own experience and life as a personal trainer, it’s that lasting results take time. We need to build habits that support health, strength and confidence throughout the year.

Here are my top 10 tips for building a body that feels good for summer and beyond.

Before starting any fitness journey, get clear on your reason for doing it. Do you want more energy? To feel stronger? Improve your health? Lose body fat? Your “why” will keep you motivated when enthusiasm naturally comes and goes. My blog from January https://janeyhfit.co.uk/6-ways-to-get-the-fitness-you-want-in-2026/ has more info on this.

Exercise doesn’t only happen in the gym or at classes. Walking, gardening, carrying shopping, playing with children and taking the stairs all contribute to your overall activity levels. Small movements add up over time.

Functional strength training helps make daily tasks easier. Using a combination of weights, resistance bands and bodyweight exercises can improve strength, balance and confidence in everyday activities.

As we age, we naturally lose muscle mass and bone density. Strength training helps counteract this process, supporting long-term health, mobility and independence. Building muscle isn’t just about appearance—it’s about protecting your future health.

This is one area that I’m super passionate about! New research from the British Journal of Sports Medicine, highlights that dedicating roughly 90 minutes to two hours per week to weightlifting and strength training significantly lowers the risk of premature death, heart disease, and neurological diseases like dementia. Strength is important, but so is movement quality. Regular stretching, mobility work and balance exercises can help reduce aches and pains while keeping you active and confident as you get older. The risk of falls increases as we age but balance is one skill you can continue to train – that’s why the balance pods often feature in the circuits and personal training sessions.

Focus on balanced meals that include protein, vegetables, healthy fats and carbohydrates to support your activity levels. Rather than labelling foods as “good” or “bad,” aim to make nourishing choices most of the time and enjoy occasional treats without guilt.

Recovery is often overlooked. Quality sleep supports muscle repair, energy levels, mood, stress management and overall wellbeing. It’s one of the most powerful health tools available.

You don’t need perfect workouts. You need regular ones. Schedule exercise into your week and have backup options available at home when life gets busy. There are YouTube overviews available to my clients– please let me know if you would like the links.

As tempting as they may seem, extreme diets and rapid weight-loss plans rarely create lasting results. Sustainable habits may take longer, but they deliver long-term success and are much easier to maintain. I’ve been on this journey too and understand the emotions. https://janeyhfit.co.uk/the-day-i-chose-me-how-my-fitness-journey-led-to-the-launch-of-a-new-career/

When exercise and movement is fun, supportive and fits into your routine you will stick with it. Find activities you enjoy, surround yourself with supportive people and make this something you look forward to.

The goal isn’t to achieve a temporary “summer body.” It’s to build a body that supports your life, boosts your confidence and keeps you strong for years to come.
