6 Ways to Get the Fitness You Want

We are approaching the end of January and the adverts encouraging us to get fit, lose weight, and find time to look after our wellbeing are everywhere! We know change is needed, but it can be hard to get motivated, especially in the winter months—and we have had plenty of cold and icy weather so far this year.

Whatever your challenge to get started, here are 6 Friendly Tips from JaneyHFit to help make 2026 the year you finally see the results you want.

Before you begin, get crystal clear on why this is important to you. Do you want to have more energy, lose fat, sleep better, feel stronger, or maintain your independence?

Find that powerful, happy “why”—this is what will keep you on track when motivation dips. Write it down or use images and photos to remind and inspire you daily.

Vague goals like “get fit” often fail. Instead, set a specific, positive goal with a focus on what you can achieve. Include short, medium, and long-term goals to build momentum and get results.

Example: A 6-Week SMART Goal. Your goal should be Specific, Measurable, Action-Oriented, Realistic, and Time-bound:

  • S (Specific): Lose 5kg (from 100kg to 95kg) and reduce body fat by maintaining a 3,500 kcal deficit each week. Prioritise protein (80–100g per day) to minimise muscle loss.
  • M (Measurable): Weigh-in on Monday mornings; measure waist circumference on weeks 1, 4, and 6; use body fat scales to monitor composition.
  • A (Action-Oriented): Log all meals in an app, hit a minimum of 8k steps a day, attend one personal training session and two classes per week. No takeaways for 6 weeks!
  • R (Realistic): Losing 0.5kg to 1kg a week is in line with ACSM guidelines for long-term weight loss.
  • T (Time-bound): A 6-week block starting 1st February to 15th March.

Fitness doesn’t have to mean slogging away at something you hate! If you like a challenge, explore strength and conditioning, or join a local group class to add a social element.

JaneyHFit offers a variety of small group classes in Hanwell, Milcombe, and Shutford. These sessions are supportive, effective, and designed to be adapted for all fitness levels.

Tip: Create a YouTube playlist of your favorite workouts. Categorise them into Cardio, Bands, Pilates, or Spin so you have an easy “go-to” list when you’re in the mood to move.

Find a friend to be your fitness buddy or hire a personal trainer to be your coach. They will be your cheerleaders when the going gets tough. Accountability is often the only difference between starting and actually sticking with it.

Results don’t happen overnight; consistency is the magic ingredient. Set regular check-ins every six weeks and honestly ask yourself: “Am I getting results?”

Consider using an app to track calories, protein, and steps. My clients moan (a little) at having to track food intake, but I promise it’s only a temporary measure to help educate on food choices. It helps us to see where we might be sabotaging our fat loss journey and where a few easy swaps can be made

The number on the scales only tells part of the story. The real wins include:

  • Fitting into your jeans more comfortably.
  • Sleeping soundly through the night.
  • Lifting heavy shopping bags with ease.
  • Having more energy to enjoy life.

Make celebration a part of your plan and tie these “non-scale victories” into how you measure your goals.
